I am nervous about the PHR exam, which I am scheduled to take Jan 31, 2008. I have spent an inordinate amount of time reading reviews and comments about the various study guides. Is it true that the SHRM system does not mirror what you actually see on the exam. One of my friends who is able to afford the class indicated that her professor told her this. The professor then recommended Ann Bogardus' study guide and practice exams.
Can anyone please shed some light.
Thanks - Worried and Nervous

I wouldn't worry if you are planning on using the SHRM learning system. The SHRM Learning system is the best system out there to prepare you for the test. It was the only thing I used and passed the PHR in the 90% range. If you know the SHRM learning system and can pass the practice tests in the mid 80 percent range you should do just fine.
It is true that it doesn't mirror the questions on the PHR but it does cover the same Body of Knowledge. I actually found the questions on the PHR to be slightly easier. I think I ended up scoring 1-2 percent higher on the actual test than I did on the SHRM practice tests.
Test taking skills are a defininte plus also.
Best wishes |

Worried and Nervous,
No need to be so worried and nervous if you have prepared for the exam. I passed the PHR and SPHR using the SHRM Learning System alone. It was a great resource, and I found the actual exam to be similar to the SHRM test questions; specifically the questions on the CD. I think the SHRM questions twist the scenario's in such a way that it actually better prepares you for the sitting exam.
I would recommend the SHRM Learing System over a classroom setting.
Good Luck! |

I had the same experience with the modules (books) from SHRM. A professor at my University advised me that (he is SPHR cert) the books did not help him at all. He recommended I study directly from the DOL website and/or a comprehensive HR or Employment Law Book. It is true that the test and the modules do not mirror eachother at all (I think it confuses individuals more than help). I missed passing by 3 points (i was not happy to see the results 497!!) and knew that it was due to the second guessing due to the modules. If you are a seasoned HR individual you will do fine on the test if not following my recommendations! |

Use the energy your expending being worried and nervous into serious study time. I passed both the PHR and SPHR using the SHRM Learning System alone. It was a great resource, and I found the study questions on the CD somewhat similar to the SHRM test questions. I took the PHR in the second testing window of 2006 and then while the info was still fresh, I took the SPHR exam in the second testing window of 2007. The method I followed was reading and outlining the study module and then taking the test at the end of the module and on the CD. This is a great way of getting in test taking mode and looking for key words in what you'll find to be somewhat long questions on the exam.
I would also recommend the SHRM Learing System over a classroom setting.
Best Wishes!!!!

| I am taking the PHR exam on January 19, 2008. I am using the SHRM Learning System plus a 5 week course and I can see from all your comments that the SHRM system is the best source. Can anyone comment on the flashcards ? Have they being really helpful ? Sometimes I think so much information confuses me. Should I concentrate more on the practice tests? I would really appreciate any comments, specially if someone has taken the test recently this year. Thanks |

I took the SPHR and passed last January. I tried using the SHRM Learning System and hated it! I used the Exam Prep book written by Dr. Larry Phillips, SPHR. It is well organized, easy to read and comes with a CD which includes hundreds of additional sample test questions. When I sat for the test many of the questions were exactly the same as the questions in this study guide. They key is to read through the chapters and answer as many sample test questions as possible as many times as possible and you will pass no problem.
Good Luck! |

I am taking the exam next month and I am using the HR Management book by Robert L. Mathis and John H. Jackson. It covers the entire exam pretty darn well and the passing rate of the class I took is over 90%...

| Hi - I used the SHRM learning system and passed both the SPHR and GPHR the first try. I think it is excellent preparation, especially if you use the CD and do the practice tests over and over ad nauseum. I also took the classes and attended study groups, where we did umpteen practice tests. Mathis and Jackson is an excellent addition to the SHRM system, but I wouldn't use it alone. As someone else pointed out, test taking skills are important and knowing in advance how the questions are structured is essential. |

| I took the PHR exam in January 2007. having bought the the 2006 version in 2006 and missed passiing by 14 points. I am scheduled to take the PHR exam in January 2008 still using the 2006 version. With the new 2007 version out, im concerned about changes that may hurt my chances of passing. I can't afford the new 2007. Will I be okay with the 2006 version? |

Thanks to all of you who took the time to provide me with great advise. Since I posted this question, I feel a bit better about the materials I have been using. Thanks again for all of your help. Good Luck to all those who are waiting to test or re-test.

| I sat for the SPHR exam in December 07'. I used the SHRM study materials and I don't believe it is a good source for preparing for the SPHR. I unfortunately did not use any other study materials. The exam was structured very differently from the practice exams and I also believe that the study material was very misleading. Maybe it is a better resource for those who are taking the PHR. To my surprise, I found that a lot of the questions/concepts weren't specifically addressed in the SHRM study materials. I would recommend using an additional resource if funds permit. SHRM is very general and a lot of the material was not representative of the actual test. Godspeed to all! |

| I took the exam yesterday for PHR and passed. It was my first time. I studied the SHRM Learning System and took a prep class at George Mason which was very helpful. The exam was very very close to questions asked throughout the learning system. Take advantage of any links to other resources within SHRM, especially the HRCI site that provides sample exams. The webinars presented through SHRM were extremely helpful. Good Luck! |
