When I you register to take the SHRM Certification class, they provide you with the CD. It is licensed and cannot be duplicated.

| I sat for the SPHR on May 1 2008 and passed. I really thought I failed because I had to think about almost every question, there were very few that I knew right off. My employer paid for a virtual class which was six 4 hour sessions to cover each module. We also were given the complete learning system, plus we had a set of Powerpoint slides for each module. I basically read each book, then went through and highlighted sections in the books based on the slides. I then studied like crazy the week before the exam and used all the flashcards. I agree that the questions on the exam were nothing like the online practice tests. However in the SPHR prep guide included with the learning system, I found the questions to be more like the ones on the exam. |

| I took the PHR in January and passed using only the Anne Bogardus study book. I thought the guide did a great job of covering the material in a comprehensive manner. I did run into a few questions that I didn't have a clue on, but that is the nice part about the exam, if you know the bulk, you will do fine.
Now, I am scheduled for the SPHR in May/June. Hopefully, same result, but this time, I did purchase a few additional guides to try to help broaden my study base. |

| I took the PHR today and failed. I paid a lot of $$ to take a month long prep course at a local university, studied like crazy, and still did not pass. The exam was NOTHING like what I had studied. It wouldn't have mattered how long I prepared as I was not studying the right way. The test was very strategic. The basic HR knowledge, terminology, and concepts were not on the test. The test assumes you already know the laws, regulations, and concepts in depth and then you are to apply them strategically. I heard HRCI has a good study system so I will check into that. |

One important factor on preparing for the exam is knowing how you best absorb and process the material. Some work best by studying from a book, others from a classroom setting, and still others need the hands on practice of mock-exams. I am a test-taker and former Princeton Review instructor, so I don't get psyched out in an exam situation. (If you do, try to find exercises or tools that will help you keep an even keel through the exam. Breathe, visualize, or whatever else will work for you.)
It has been a number of years since I took the exam, and it is a different exam today than it was when I took the pencil and paper test. When I prepped, I took the local SHRM chapter prep class, but due to travel I only attended about half the classes, but read the book thoroughly. I borrowed a SHRM learning system and ran through as many mock-exams as possible. I used this combined technique because I knew what I needed to succeed: classroom structure to make sure I'm keeping pace with the material and hands-on practice of mock-exams.
I'm currently a member of the committee who writes exam questions for the PHR and SPHR. When approaching the exam, remember that SHRM does not write the exam, rather it is created and administered by HRCI. While the SHRM learning system can help you get used to how questions are structured and the various areas of knowledge, it isn't going to be the same as the exam you take. In addition, the committees are developing new questions based on a variety of resources including books, journals, and industry periodicals. Therefore, the basic text you receive as part of a local SHRM review course does provide a solid grounding, it won't cover everything. For those studying for the SPHR, I think nn/aa has a good strategy when s/he said they were looking for materials to "...try to help broaden my study base."

| I took the PHR exam a week ago and passed! I found that studying materials from different sources helped. I also attended a study group, used flashcards, test simulators and did a lot of note taking. Overall, I would say that the best preparation for the PHR and SPHR exam is to never stop studying. In other words, continue to expand on your base of knowledge and try to incorporate the core components of the test into your yearly HR responsibilities. I'm trying for my SPHR in December... wish me luck! |

| I am scheduled to take the PHR exam June 20th. I am deathly afraid of failing but I am going to get the Anne Bogardus study guide for the PHR exam. I have over 8 years of experience in HR and feel like this may be an asset. What I would like to see here from any test takers is ther percentage of topics on the PHR test. I will be taking the SPHR exam in June and I am beyond freaking out. I am reading Larry Phillips, SPHR study guide, writing notes, making flashcards. I am also a member of SHRM. I think I may just be getting myself all worked up over this. Has anyone tested for the SPHR in May? Did you find that it wasn't what you expected? Very nervous to take this. But not many HR managers are certified, so I thought why not give it a shot? Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

I am taking the SPHR in June also. On the 14th, which is fast approaching. I'm freaking out too. I've spent so much money to take the test - not just the fee but the study materials I purchased. Whoo. I'm very nervous.
I read Larry Phillips' SPHR guide first and then when I read Anne Bogardus' study guide, I realized just how good the Phillips guide really is. I'm also reading two other text books because the majority of the SPHR test is supposedly in the strategic management category. The other books are Human Resource Management by Gary Dessler and Human Resource Management by Mathis and Jackson. I also purchased a CD collection that said it was like the SHRM learning system but I'm sure its not because its not really good at all.
With all that said, I just feel like you never know what's going to be on the test. It may be worded tricky or it may have questions on material I never studied.
What day are you taking the test this month?

Hello, I took the prep course through Villanova in fall 2005 and passed the PHR test on the first try in Jan 06. Working in government I would have had a hard time without the course as much of the info in SHRM and HRCI applies more to the private sector. I beleive that the SPHR exam has a bit more emphasis on Strategic Planning and Labor Relations than the PHR exam. I also found an on-line practice exam that I took (for a fee). I scored pretty well on this so it boosted my confidence. I printed it out and went over it several times in preparation for the actual exam. Hope this helps. Good luck! |

| I took the PHR Examination today for the first time and I PASSED!!!
What a relief. I have a little of 5 years of HR experience mostly Recruitment and Administrative based. I completed a HR Management Certificate program at a local college last June. Having completed the course work a year ago I really needed to brush up on my HR BOK along with my testing skills prior to taking the test.
I choose not to purchase the SHRM study guide - it was just too expensive for me. With limited funds I decide to purchase the Anne Bogardus PHR/SPHR Certification Study Guide Second Edition it cost about $50.00.
I studied approximately 10 hours a week for roughtly 8 weeks. During the first 4 weeks most of my studying was done on the weekend-the last 4 weeks I studied for about 1.5 to 2 hours pretty much every day.
The Study Guide contained prep tests that I feel closely mirrored the type and style of questions I found on the actual test.
Two weeks before the test I took the HRCI on-line prep test $45.00. This was money well spent because it gave me a good sense of what areas I needed to spend more time on.

Hi All, I appeared for phr certification june 28th and I cleared it. SHRM Learning system just rocks. It is the best guide for phr/sphr certification. Everything is just so helpful. The information in the books, the cd practice tests questions, glossaries, flashcards etc. It builds your base and makes you more confident by the time you go and appear for an exam.
Are you looking for a SHRM Learning System 2008? The SHRM system is the most comprehensive material that I would recommend for PHR and SPHR. I am selling SHRM Learning System 2008. Its a set of 6 modules that covers all 6 areas that you need to prepare yourself for while appearing for PHR and SPHR, plus the CD (CD has bonus one 50 questions, bonus two 50 questions, 50 questions for each module and flashcards for each module, 50 questions for pretest, 100 questions for post test, 1040 practice tests from all the module, glossary, flashcards for 754 terms, case study for each module and hr updates for each module).

I am expected to take the SPHR in November 2008. Will the test dramacatially change from the one administered in June 2008? I have sat for the SPHR twice and have failed the exam by marignal points (2 points in 2005; 5 points in 2008). Can you give me any advice on publications, books, articles, etc. that I can refer to aid in my test preparation. I found SHRM information to be useful as far as understanding HRM; but not helpful to provide sample test, or expand on a advance level to prepare you for the SPHR. I used Exam Prep by Dr. Larry Phillis, and HR Review Workbook. I am not sure if my brian was overloaded or if I need to come up with a better test taking strategy. Any addition insight you could give will be helpful. Just a note. I am a seasoned HR professional with 10 years of experience. I have done well on the Workforce Planning and Employment, Compensation and Benefits, and the Employee Relation and Labor Relation sections. Mainly because I manage these areas regulary. I continue to struggle with the Strategic Management and Human Resource Development section. Areas that I am not as versed in my current role.
I am determined to pass the SPHR and prefer not to sit for the PHR. Any advice you can provide would be helpful.
