| I took the SPHR exam a few days ago and passed. The best advice anyone can give in my opinion (included in the HR book by Bogardus) is: USE MULTIPLE SOURCES. I used Larry Phillips SPHR, the HRCI assessments, and the Bogardus book. None of these prepared me in the way that my experience prepard me. The exam is HARD and frustrating. I'd say 50% was knowledge that could be studied and 50% was instinct from experience.
Try not to second guess yourself (by marking questions and going back to correct yourself) and read the WHOLE question and all answers BEFORE answering. Remember, you have to pick the "BEST" answer, so there are usually two right answers to a question. |

| I took the PHR in 2008 and failed by 7 points. I am scheduled to retake the exam this June. To prepare, I bought PHR Exam Prep by Cathy Lee Gibson, Human Resource Certification by Karen Yasgoor & Susan Bressler, and PHR/SPHR by Anne Bogardus. I would recommend the first two books because they have exam questions that are somewhat similar to the actual exam. Good Luck! |

| I passed using the HRCP Program: excellent study materials, cheaper than SHRM's, more comprehensive, great customer service, and the author used to be on HRCI's board of directors. I'm thinking about taking the SPHR soon and will use these same materials. In addition to the HRCP books I took the HRCI assessment exams. The practice was helpful but I was disappointed I could review the exam. |

Hello,
I gave the PHR exam this afternoon and failed. I had been
studying for the past 2.5 months from SHRM websites, and other
websites, plus the PHR certification book by Anne.M. Bogardus. I
thought I was well prepared this morning before going for the exam and
breezed thru most of the questions. But was really shocked when I got
the preliminary results at the end of the test. I had given this same
test earlier this year in January and not passed but mostly because I
had only studied for 3 weeks. This time, I had put in a lot more
effort. The tougher questions on the test were very fuzzy and confusing. Does
anybody have any suggestions as to what to use to pass this test ? Does
this certification determine your knowledge in the practical
application of HR in the industry.
I am really disappointed in
myself today and wondering where I went wrong. I will have to wait for
3 weeks to get the scaled scores.
Any inputs are appreciated.
Thanks
Devyani |

| Hi Devyani:
Sorry about the exam. There is really an art to taking this exam. Tracy Michaud and I teach the certification preparation course at St. Joseph's College. It is a 12 week course that helps you to prepare for the exam, not only from a knowledge point of view, but from test taking skills. I do know that HRACC grants a scholarship to an individual each year to attend this class. You may want to inquire. If you are interested, you can contact St. Joseph's College in West Hartford. We just had a 100% pass rate for the PHR from our last class. |

Hello,
I took the PHR exam today (1st time) and I was very relieved when I saw the preliminary "passed" result. I am praying that this will be the "official" determination as well. At any rate, I purchased the SHRM learning system at the end of February 09 and have been studying religiously since. I read through all of the modules, taking the the PHR exams after each one and reviewing the associated flash cards. I also used the resource center's audio and webcasts to review the information they stated was important. I took good notes from each of these sessions. After I completed the PHR section of the learning system, I took the tests in the SPHR section, reviewed the SPHR study guide booklet and went through the case study online. In the midst of all of this I continued to review my notes and the printed flash cards (I took them everywhere).
I was concerned about the actual testing format so I did purchase the assessment exams from HRCI...which were VERY HELPFUL. They gave me a feel for the type of questions that would be asked. While taking the assessment exams I jotted down the concepts that I struggled with as the question was displayed. This helped me go back to find the information in the study materials so that I became familiar with the concept. I also used the "related information" section in the SHRM learning system testing modules to review the concepts behind the answers. I added all of this information to notes, so that I could continue to use my notes as a study guide. I took the first assessment exam in early May and passed with a 78%. I continued to study all areas, but I focused my studying on the areas that were problematic on the assessment test. I took my final assessment on this past Monday and passsed with a 90%, which made me feel comfortable that I was ready for the exam.
I was very surprised when taking the test because some of the concepts were not in the learning system at all. However, I found it valuable to understand the concepts that go along with the terms. The questions I saw were more conceptual from HRCI's perspective of the body of knowledge, not your organizations way of practicing HR. Therefore, just memorizing the vocab and knowing the acts will not help you pass. It is more of a complete understanding of the concepts that helped me.
Good luck! :-) |

Congratulations on your prelim pass status! since being laid off earlier this year I decided to pursue the PHR by purchasing the SHRM materials and taking a prep course but balked at the total out-of-pocket expense. I'm hoping to purchase a system that worked for someone at an affordable rate. When you obtain your final status, please contact me if you would like to pass on your study materials. Thanks! Beth

Hello everyone, I'm taking the PHR 1 week from today. I'm really nervous after reading all these posts! I've used 3 different study materials (the SHRM learning system '07 and 2 additional books.) I hope I'm ready. Can anyone tell me if there were really detailed questions, for example how many years to retain a certain document, etc.
Thank you!! |

I take the test in two weeks. I am using the Borgadus book and I have went though the Gibson Book. I wanted to know what people's reaction were who took this test during this period. I am wondering if there is anything else I can do to prepare myself? |

Hi Everyone, I took the PHR exam today for the first time and passed! I have been studying the SHRM Learning system since April, and also took a course at a local university just before this past Christmas. I have to say, that the test was ALOT easier than I thought it would be. Many of the questions were very simple and basic questions that would be obvious if you studied the material. I do agree that there are certainly some questions that were vague, or just had vague answer choices. Just read the question as many times as you can, and the answer will eventually be clear. Yes, there were questions that I had no idea about, but not a lot. If you have the SHRM learning system, I highly recommend taking and re-taking the quizzes and final review. I just simply cut & paste all of my wrong answers to a word document, and studied those items in depth. SHRM learning system is definitely the way to go, and although a lot of people say the questions are completely different on the exam, I found them to be similar to what you will find on the exam. Best of Luck! |

| I took the SPHR exam for the first time 2 weeks ago and passed. I'm hoping the "preliminary pass" is really a pass. Has anyone heard of a false preliminary pass result?
I studied for at least 20 hours/week for 3 months using the Larry Phillips' SPHR book, Anne Bogardus' PHR/SPHR, the HRCI assessments, the Certgear tests and a PHR/SPHR audio learning system from ebay. I also used a set of 2003 SHRM learning system books (content almost identical to the Phillips book). The actual exam covered maybe 20% of what I studied. The questions most closely resembled the ones from the HRCI assessments in terms of format. In terms of content, I don't think the questions resembled any of the tests I took preparing for the exam. None of the questions were detailed. Intuition and common sense seemed to help more than any of the material I studied. Memorizing court cases and details like how long to retain documents won't do much. |

| I took the PHR exam yesterday and passed! I studied pretty hard, probably 100+ hours since March. I used the SHRM Learning System ('07), the Anne Bogardus book and an additional book. My recommendation would be to use a number of sources to study from...because there were things that weren't in the Learning System. Overall, I thought the test had some questions that were simple but some that were very challanging. It's definately do-able though. |

Hi everyone, I'm planning on taking the PHR in December this year. I do not have any experience in Human Resources (and it was not my major in college). I'm going to take the exam as a recent graduate. Have any of you taken the exam with no experience? And which test preparation books/resources did you use?
Thanks! |
