| Hi,
I am appearing for the PHR test early next week and very nervous. All i have studied is the Anne Bogurdus book and took a free test from the HRCI Study guide. Cannot afford the SHRM Learning system. Studying 3 -4 hrs a day enough ? Can anyone suggest what else can be done to succeed ??? |

I just took the PHR exam last week and passed. Although I had been using the SHRM Learning system and also took a 12 week online class, I have to tell you that the two things that I found to be most helpful during the exam were being relaxed and reading every single word of every question very carefully. The questions are worded so that if you read them quickly, you may choose a different answer than the one that is the "BEST" answer. Relax, read slowly and then strike out the answers that you KNOW are wrong. If you find that an answer is taking too long, "MARK" it and move to the next question so that you don't get flustered and frustrated. After you answer a few questions, you will find that you start to develop a flow and you begin to move through them more quickly. I was very fortunate because my test included very few formula/math based questions. You know, like the cost/benefit or yield ratio questions....almost none of those. The computer has a calculator that you can use but I didn't need it at all. If you have general knowledge of the majority of the material and a good working knowledge of HR practices and you relax and read carefully, you should be fine. Good luck:) |

Just took and passed the PHR exam today.
I was lucky enough to obtain a copy of the SHRM Learning System from a co-worker. It's a good source of information, but IT WILL NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO TAKE THIS TEST. The questions at the end of each section are nothing like you will see on the exam. The same with the Module quizzes on the CD. The questions on the bonus tests are more similar, but I would definitely recommend taking the HRCI practice exams. Much more realistic as to what to expect. I thought I had it down until I took those tests.
This test is tricky! "BEST" way, "LEAST" effective, etc. meaning there are really more than one right answer. Pretty much every single question can be narrowed down to two possible answers. Which is helpful. And you can strike out the obviously wrong responses and come back to the questions later which is great.
A lot of people recommended taking your time, taking breaks, but just rushing it through it all help me. Answer the ones you know for sure, mark the ones you don't to review later. Also, first instincts on this exam are probably right. I went back and changed only a couple answers. I think that might have made the difference. My co-worker went back and changed a ton, and barley failed the exam.
What a freakin' relief though. I will sleep good tonight. Good luck to those still working on it! And thanks to everyone who provided advice on this forum.

| I took the PHR on Saturday and passed. I have been studying for months and this is the first test I have taken in years!!! I learned that I am a crammer. I studied like crazy on Friday and Saturday morning. Most of what was on my test I feel I sunk in my brain Saturday am. My test was mostly OSHA, Performance Management and Union questions. I also had quite a few questions regarding ADA, FMLA and Title VII. I did the test in 1 hour and 40 minutes and felt like I must have done something wrong. I started going back to review questions but by the time I got to the 3rd one desided that it is what it is and hit finish. I was so excited to see pass!!! I would say don't second guess yourself and go with your first instict. Good Luck to everyone who is taking the exam now or in the fall. |

I purchased the learning system for 2008 and took the exam. I passed the PHR and it was a breeze. I would suggest using the books and CD because it did have two or three questions on the recent law changes. I don't know if the books at book stores have the changes that happen monthly. The HR learning system is tied to a website that allows you to stay up to date on all changes made.
Now that I have passed the test I have the total learning system + cd for sale. I am selling everything for $300.00. The are only 2 pages in the entire books that have hightlighted parts. I didnt write on any of the sample test or in the books at all its was a habit from college years to be able to sale back to bookstores. Anyhow if you would be interested in buying the books and cd.

| I just took the PHR and it wasn't anything like my study guides. There were 2 correct answers, 2 wrong answers, but only one "BEST" answer. Needless to say, I didn't pass, but I read the Borgadus book at least 3 times. My best advice is not to use that study guide, and to try something else. |

| i took the phr exam and did not pass, i was so depressed and cried... but looking back i don't believe I studied enough. although i did purchase the shrm learning, i suppose i should have studied every module longer, and better. I will try again in december. will update you on what i did diffrently..and tell you if it worked. |

| I took the PHR on June 19 and finally received official result today. I passed! This is my first time and I am an international student who was not familiar with US HR laws. I used only the SHRM Learning System. I read six modules texts three times, First for overview, second for details, and third for only area I missed in CD practice tests. In addition, I did total 1040 questions in the CD two times. I think the SHRM Learning System is best material. |

Here was my process for passing the PHR.
1. Obtained the 2008 SHRM learning system. 2. Waited until 2 weeks prior to my exam to even look at it. 3. Read each module once and took notes, answered the questions in the book as I went along. I would estimate about 90% answered correctly. 4. I finished reading and taking notes by the Friday before my exam, which was Monday. 5. Right after that I took the pre-test on the CD. Scored about 80%. 6. Saturday spent the entire day reviewing my notes. I read each module's notes twice through, then took the module quiz 1 for that module. Read through the module notes 1 more time, then took the module quiz 2. Repeated until done with all the modules. Scored between 70%-85% on each one. That took all day Saturday. (Saturday study time ~ 13 hours) 7. Sunday spent the morning reading over the module notes once. 8. Took the bonus tests on the CD. Scored about 60%. Starting to panic a bit. 9. Read through my notes one more time and took the post-test. Again scored about 60%. Pretty much feel I have a 50-50 shot at this point. 10. Played some PS3 for the rest of the night as I couldn't take it anymore. (Sunday study time ~ 8 hours) 11. Monday morning did a quick review of all the legal cases. I really couldn't remember any of them. (waste of time by the way, 1 question out of 225 on the exam was regarding a court case) (Monday study time ~ 2 hours) 12. Took the exam... quickly. Went with my first instinct on pretty much all questions. As others stated, you can usually narrow down to 2 quickly, then the correct one out of those two is a bit tricky. 13. After 225 questions and all the studying my mind was fried. After I submitted I thought I had pretty much a 50-50 shot at passing. Results came back passed! (Test taking time ~ 2 hours)

I failed the exam on 6/30/09. I studied so much I couldn't remember a thing. My question to you is the SHRM Learning system doesn't teach to the exam. I felt as if there were maybe 5 questions on the PHR that I learned from tne SHRM/LS. Did you feel the same way? Whre did you take the exam. I took it in Rego Park/NY |

I feel mostly the same way. The SHRM book quizzes, cd quizzes were
nothing like you see on the exam. The questions on the exam are all
situational. The questions on the CD and in the book really only test
your knowledge of a subject, not your ability to apply that knowledge to
a given situation.
The learning system gives you a ton of knowledge, but I agree that it doesn't teach to the exam very well.
I didn't actually take the HRCI practice tests, but I hear they are far more reflective as to what to expect.
I took the exam in Salt Lake City, UT.
I think the exam comes down to instinct, experience and your test taking ability more than anything else. If you were a poor test taker in school I can see someone struggling big time.
I still haven't received my test scores, should come any day, but I have a feeling I was right on the edge. I can't say I feel like I passed it easily by any means.

@Jasper I agree. Nothing quite prepares you as much as you would like! @Nee1111 The SHRM materials cover every topic that is supposed to be on the exam. The HRCP materials cover the exact same stuff, but they cost half the amount of the SHRM stuff (and have some nice extras).
