| Is there a study group available for the PHR exam in the Charlotte area? If there is none available, are there any willing participants willing to meet together for a preparation study group. Also, I know that there are a few that took the test and are willing to mentor a few students. This could probably qualify for HRCI credits as you are doing something good for the community. Please respond only if you are serious about the joining/offering expertise in the PHR review session. |

Hi Angela,
I appeared for phr this june 2008. Would like to give you few tips. Following is what I did. It worked well for me.
1. Buy SHRM Learning system. It is the best investment one can make for phr/sphr exam. It will pay off with great results. Read each module at least 3 times (total). 2. Re-read the key areas (highlighted in each module). 3. Try to get hold of a many practice tests as possible. The more practice tests you will solve the more clear the concepts will be. Practice tests will throw light on weaker issues and you will study those issues again to clear the concept. You will try to relate th question with correct answer mentioned. With each and every practice test you will turn more confident. You will get such practice tests in yahoogroups, old email threads. Try to download them from yahoogroups. Solve each and every practice test atleast twice. 4. Focus on topics based on their weightage. Cover the topics with high weightage first. 5. Try to join as many yahoogroups (phr/sphr) as possible. If you have any query, you can just send an email on such yahoogroups. There would be many people to respond back. Few of them would act like a mentor, would guide you throughout. This is my personal experience. 6. Do the study questions in the SPHR/PHR Preparation Book. They are the closest realistic questions that will be on the exam 7. Review the question tips in the Preparation Book. One key tip is to re-read each question. It allows you to process the information in the question without a rushed response. 8. Use the LearnSHRM site to answer as many questions as possible. If you get through all 1095 of the final review questions, you have a very high chance of passing the exam. 9. Take the full 4 hours to do your exam. No matter if you finish early and review all your marked questions, still review all other questions and use the time given 10. Take a 3-5 minute break midway through the exam. You will need to clear your head and refocus. Deep breaths, meditation, prayer, etc. Anything that will help you relax 11. I do not recommend heavy studying the day before or day of exam. Quickly review key areas the day before, you will need a good night's sleep and a good breakfast on the day of. 12. Remind yourself to stay focused on the exam when you're in the exam. Many times your mind will stray and you will fixate on one question. Mentally and physically move on to the other question 13. Be confident. You have prepared, now it is time to dominate the test. Your confidence will help you be sure of your answers.
Wish you luck.
Thanks, Leena

I found the HRCP Program to be a more comprehensive and less expensive alternative to the SHRM LS. I passed the PHR last December. I perform very few HR functions and my education is in management, not HR. I needed the depth the HRCP Program gave me. I studied for approximately 150 hours over a 4 month period. My practice exam scores on HRCP and the HRCI assessment exam were great predictors of my actual score.
Good luck to all! |

I spent the $$$, took the certificate course by SHRM offered by a local university. I passed each module both in class and the practice exams at home. I also passed the final, which combined all the modules. Prior to the course, I earned my masters degree in human resources management and have worked in the field for 4 years. Combined with the experience, education and then successful completion of the the model exams and final, I felt I was well pre-pared. However, when I took the certification exam, I failed!!! It was a very frustrating, disappointing experience. I devoted three months of study, only to fail. The questions on the certification exam were different than the questions in the study guide. And, there were a lot of trick questions on the exam. I did not experience the "obvious" questions. I am determined to get my certification, but I don't plan to go the route of the prep course again. Thanks to those of you who recommended other resource guides. Thanks also to those of you who shared similiar frustration. At least now I know I am not alone.
I plan to check out the Anne Bogardus guide. If anyone knows of other guides, please share. Thanks for listening :) |

I am using the SHRM learning system ,the Anne Bogardus study guide and flash cards. Anyone out there have any other suggestions? I am trying to stay focused and not panick, why do I want this thing so damned bad? |

hi, I am planning on taking the PHR exam by the end of 2008 or early 2009. I have currently ordered SHRM learning system to prep. for the phr exam..is this material sufficient? or do I need to study from any other source too? Also, on a average how much time do you think one should devote for phr studies? look forward to your reply
thanks |

| I've signed up to take the shrm exam this winter (08-09) and I'd love a study partner. Also if someone has an shrm guide they'd like to sell for repurposing, I'd be very interested. |

| Congrats on your passing. I am currently studying for the exam. So you say Strategic Management is roughtly 70% of the exam??? According to my Anne Bogardus Study guide, strategic management represents 12% of the exam. Do you think it's changed that much in a year's time???? |
