Hello everyone.
I take the PHR exam on 1/26. I am using the Anne Bogardus Study Guide and the the HRCP LS. I will admit that I lost many, many valuable weeks of study time due to the holidays. Started at end of September and had a great plan. Unfortunately, I faltered. So, we'll see how it goes.
I find the two to be very different. Through suggestions on this forum and others, I thought it best to have more than one resource since I am not currently in the HR field. The Study guide seems to cover quite a bit more legislation than HRCP. Then again, I could just be that tired of both of them that I don't remember...tee hee. The study guide has a CD with electronic flashcards and 2 practice tests while the LS has 6 modules, flashcards, and access to practice tests on the HRCP site.
As recommended, I also purchased the HRCI assessment and completed any other "free" assessments I could find. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the guide or LS over the other as I believe they are compliments.
My favorite part of the Study Guide is that the book is on CD-Rom. Made it easier to read as the print was small. I was able to save it to my home computer, and then take the CD to work to read during lunch or breaks. Favorite part of the LS is the Flash Cards.
I will definitely post my experience next week. Well, that is what I can recall as I'm sure I will have brain exhaustion once this is all done.
Good luck to all. |

I need to take the exam in the May-June 2009 window, but can't do $600 for the SHRM learning system. Anyone suggest good sources that won't break the bank to study? Right now I'm planning on using the Anne Bogardus prep guide and a Nolo Employee Law book to get me started. I just feel those won't detailed enough for me. Does anyone know anything about the HRCP study materials? They are much cheaper than the SHRM materials, but still pricey at $345. Has anyone here passed without using the SHRM system?
Also, if there's anyone looking to part with a 2007 or 2008 SHRM learning system I'd be interested on talking price/details. |

| I took the test on 1/23/09 and I did not pass, a good bit of the questions were vague. I won;t know for a couple of weeks exactly what my score was. I will post when I find out. I will take it again, I refuse to loose! |

I took the PHR exam and passed on 1/24/09. I have 5 years of HR experience (1 yr in Comp and 4 years as a Generalist). The exam was challenging, but if you attend a SHRM prep class through a university and use the SHRM learning system for 3-4 months you should pass. To effectively pass the exam, you must study diligently by reading each module, reviewing the flash cards, and complete practice tests. Practice tests are the key to success in this exam. Practice, Practice, Practice. This exam is a commmitment. You can't study for a week and pass this exam. Don't waste your time and your money if you are not going to put the time in. Also, you will not pass the exam by only reading and reviewing flash cards. When you are completing the practice tests through the learning system, in the modules, or in any book that your purchase on your own, make sure you review the rationale for each question (correct or incorrect answers). This is the best way to learn.
Hope this helps. Best of luck to you. |

OK, I passed the exam today. Funny thing...I passed the exam, but cannot figure out how to "join" this forum...LOL! Guess I will remain a guest.
I feel it only fair to contribute as this is one of the sites I used to help me prepare for my exam. Exam difficulty is relative. So, I really cannot elaborate on how easy or difficult the exam was. I can tell you that while knowing some definitions and acronyms will help, it's likely not enough to pass. The materials I used during my preparation were for PHR and SPHR. As a result, I covered everything. I did not try to disseminate between the two and got a general understanding of it all. I do not, and have not worked in HR. I have worked in "Learning" which falls under the HROD umbrella at some orgs. If I can pass, so can you!
Because I completed the exam at the end of the testing window, not sure if having topics will help those taking the exam in the Spring. Some of what I can remember from the exam: 4/5 rule, ADA, validity, visas, Sherman Anti-trust, compa-ratio, benefit and contribution plans, union "stuff" and OSHA. Thing is, you cant go just look up the definitions in the glossary. You need to understand the topics in order that you can apply it to the situation presented and select the MOST appropriate response.
I am going to be holding on to my materials as I am considering taking the SPHR provided I can find a job in HR...(-: |

| Congratulations on passing the exam! I am planning on taking it during the May-June 2009 window. I unfortuantely can't purchase the SHRM learning system for the cost they are charging but would like to discuss with you what you may be willing to sell it for. |

I took the PHR on 1/26/09 and passed. I used the 2007 version of the SHRM learning system to prepare. I really skimped on studying...may 10 hours total. I just took one of the practice test for each module and then reviewed the areas that were covered on that test. If it didn't come up on a practice test, I didn't study it.
I am an attorney so I already knew a lot of the legal stuff (although I still had to guess at some). There were a lot of question about the ADA specifically, as well as some other laws. I'm not really sure about the comments that others have made about 70% of the test being strategic management...I didn't really categorize the questions in my mind as I was taking the test. If I'm being honest, I had to guess at maybe 30% of the questions. |

Anyone in Northern California selling their 2008 Shrm Learning System? Even an older version would work for me. I'm planning to take the SPHR Exam in the Spring.
Thanks. Michelle |

| I have the prep course/booklets (6) that I purchased from HRCP that I no longer need and would be willing to give away. I purchased in 2007 so I don't think the material has changed significantly. If anyone is interested, let me know. |

Hi There,
I am planning on taking the PHR sometime this year and taking a review course that will begin in a few weeks. I actually took it a few years back out of college and did not pass, but now have a good 3-4 years of HR Generalist experience. If anyone has any great tips and study guides to help me pass this time that would be great :) My email is rakhipatel930@gmail.com. Thanks. |

Posted By n/a on 01/31/2008 4:57 PM I just took the PHR exam today and passed. I could not believe it. Prior to this I took the SHRM prep course and studied the CD and was running at about 80% in the final review questions. Still I didn't feel totally prepared.
When I started the PHR today, my heart sunk after about the first 20 questions. I was sure I was going to bomb it. The way they worded the questions were very different and much more ambiguous than the SHRM study guide. I didn't see any questions that were close to the SHRM guide. Every question seemed to throw in a curve ball, and it was very frustrating. But I just went with my gut instincts and answered what I thought would be right. I didn't think I would even come close! I think what helped me was to pay attention to what the question was asking.
When I was leaving, I told the proctor that I was surprised that I passed. She said, "I can understand, a lot of people haven't been passing this test."
I took the exam today and passed. The questions were hard and I used all of the time allowed but the last two hours were used reviewing the questions I marked as "not sure". Needless to say, I am very pleased. I used 100% self study method using the SHRM Learning system 2007 and feel that it was more than enough to get me ready, although I agree completely with the poster I am quoting above. The CD that comes with the system is by far the best way to do practice questions. Good luck to all taking the test in the next window, it can be done!!!

FYI - Not sure how much you are willing to pay, but Ebay is a good place to find the SHRM Learning System. I purchased the 2007 version in November 2008 for about $250 and took and passed the PHR in January 2009. |

Marcela, have you had any takers for the HRCP books? If not I
definitely am interested. Are you charging anything for the books?
Please let me know either way as I need to order the system soon to
prepare for May testing.
Thanks,
Cynthia

I am planning to take the SPHR test in the Dec-Jan window. I think I will not be ready for the May-June window as the tests are really tough. I am using the Study guide by Anne Bogardus, and SHPR Prep by Phillip and I just ordered two other books - Study guide by Anne Bogardus (third edition - revised for the 2009 tests) and the Human Resource Certification Book by Karen Yasgoor and Susan Bressler, the good thing about the latter is that it includes 4 full practice tests, two for PHR and two for SPHR. These are affordable books so why spent $799 on SHRM LS.
Good luck to everyone |
