Benefit of SPHR Certification
Body:
Posted By n/a on 10/24/2007 9:46 AM
I came from Operations into HR. In the initial stages, long-term HR practitioners questioned my competency level in the field and held me at arm's length. Obtaining my SPHR was one way in which I was able to demonstrate competence. Of course, it is actions that count and they needed to be there as well.
From a WIIFM perspective, my spouse is also an HR Manager. The deciding element of his being selected for the position he currently holds was his certification.
And then, of course, more and more positions are "SPHR preferred".
Lastly, HR is a field in which many of us have degrees particular to HR, but many more have other degrees. Some have grown up in the career, and some have switched. It is good for us as a profession to have a measuring stick that indicates whether or not someone knows the elements of HR and is truly qualified to be a member of that group. I am notsaying that not having the certification means that you are not qualified, simply that having the certification means that you are qualified to understand the issues and what is needed to address them. Whether you can actually do so is another issue.
